EU Urged to Strengthen Its Defense Capabilities

Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys has called on the European Union to significantly enhance its defense posture. He pointed to Germany's specific struggles in fully staffing the military brigades designated for deployment in Lithuania. With volunteer numbers for these units ranging only from 28% to 47%, the challenge of achieving necessary military readiness is laid bare. This call comes amid heightened security concerns in Eastern Europe following Russia's war in Ukraine.

Budrys stressed that two units must be fully manned by the end of this year, with their deployment scheduled for 2027. It is known that as of last September, approximately 400 German armed forces personnel were serving in Lithuania.

'The time has come for you to be strong – stronger than ever before. The time has come to build muscle and show teeth. To be decisive. Brave. Purposeful. To stop reacting and start shaping. You must finally become a geopolitical force.' Kęstutis Budrys

Security Imperatives in Europe

He further emphasized that the EU, as the world's third-largest economy and a single market of 450 million consumers, possesses the potential to set global standards across various domains, provided it can effectively merge this potential with its industrial capacity.

Lithuania's appeal for a more robust EU defense underscores the pressing security concerns shaped by the current geopolitical climate in Europe. Germany's recruitment difficulties may signal broader challenges facing European militaries in ensuring collective defense. Strengthening the military readiness of member states could prove pivotal in reinforcing regional security and shaping a cohesive EU defense policy.
