Lithuania Summons Belarusian Chargé d’Affaires Over Weather Balloon Incursion

Литва викликала білорусського тимчасового повіреного у зв'язку з вторгненням метеозондів.

Airspace Breach Incident in Lithuania

On the night of May 13, Lithuania summoned Belarus’s chargé d’affaires following a violation of its airspace. The incident involved the launch of weather balloons from Belarusian territory, which Lithuanian authorities claim were used as signal repeaters. Vilnius has labeled these actions a hybrid attack orchestrated by the regime of Alexander Lukashenko, warning that such repeated incursions threaten the safety of the country’s airspace.

As a result, Lithuanian air traffic controllers were forced to temporarily shut down airspace over Vilnius International Airport due to the imminent risk of collision with the uncontrolled balloons. Lithuania demands that Minsk immediately cease these aggressive acts, holding Belarus fully accountable under international law for border provocations and for creating hazardous conditions in the skies over a NATO member state.

Broader Security Risks for the Region

Lithuanian officials have dismissed any notion that the balloon launches were accidental, stressing the gravity of the situation. This event highlights the vulnerabilities countries face in protecting their airspace and raises serious concerns about the safety of civilian aviation across the region.

The escalation underscores mounting tensions between Lithuania and Belarus, which could have severe implications for regional security. It also reinforces the need for robust international cooperation and dialogue to prevent future occurrences, as airspace safety challenges extend beyond Lithuania to affect European security as a whole.

The recent airspace violation by Belarus is part of a broader pattern of military activity that raises concerns about regional stability. As highlighted in a related report, increased military logistics in Belarus have been noted, further exacerbating border tensions. This escalation not only threatens Lithuania but also underscores the need for vigilance among neighboring countries as they navigate the complexities of security in the region.
