Lockheed Martin Unveils New HIMARS FLEX Capable of Firing Patriot Missiles

Новітня система HIMARS FLEX від Lockheed Martin здатна запускати ракети Patriot.

HIMARS System Upgraded to the FLEX Variant

Lockheed Martin has introduced an upgraded version of its HIMARS system, now called HIMARS FLEX. This new variant features several enhancements, including a redesigned chassis that accommodates two launch pods instead of one. As a result, the combat vehicle can carry up to 12 GMLRS guided missiles, significantly boosting its firepower.

Beyond its increased ammunition capacity, the HIMARS FLEX also brings air and missile defense capabilities to the table. It can fire PAC-3 missiles from the Patriot system, enabling it to handle air defense missions. The system supports multiple loadout configurations, including:

  • 12 GMLRS rockets
  • eight surface-to-air missiles

Additionally, the HIMARS FLEX is integrated with the IBCS network-centric management system, allowing it to receive targeting data from any compatible radar or sensor. This integration enhances the system's effectiveness in modern combat scenarios.

“The ability of HIMARS FLEX to shoot and scoot, combined with its increased ammunition load, rapid reloading, and autonomous operation, delivers distributed, resilient fires in contested environments” - Lockheed Martin

In light of these developments, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has outlined topics for the upcoming Ramstein meeting, highlighting the relevance of discussions around new military technologies and potential partnerships. For context, the Ramstein format is a key forum for coordinating international military aid to Ukraine. Upgrading HIMARS to the FLEX level could represent a significant step in strengthening defense capabilities amid modern challenges.

The Growing Importance of Advanced Military Technologies

The upgrade of the HIMARS system to the FLEX variant underscores the increasing need to adapt military technologies to emerging threats. In the context of active combat and shifting tactical situations, enhanced firepower and the integration of advanced control systems can substantially impact the effectiveness of military operations. This development may also spur further international defense cooperation, as nations seek new ways to strengthen their armed forces and counter evolving threats.
