Gambling Addiction in Russia: Scope and Challenges
Gambling addiction has reached the scale of a national crisis in Russia. According to Kaplan Panesh, Deputy Chairman of a State Duma committee, between 5% and 12% of the country's adult population may suffer from severe forms of this dependency, equating to roughly 13 million people. The issue is particularly acute among younger citizens, with an estimated 5% to 10% of Russians under the age of 30 potentially addicted to gambling. This widespread problem mirrors challenges seen in other nations with large gambling industries.
Kaplan Panesh emphasized that a key tool in combating gambling addiction will be the creation of a unified register of individuals who have voluntarily renounced gambling.
