Global Population Could Halve by 2064 as Climate Collapse Looms, Study Warns

Population Decline Forecast

A study published in the scientific journal Chaos, Solitons & Fractals suggests that under the worst-case scenario, the world's population could shrink by half by the year 2064. Researchers point to several key drivers that could trigger such a catastrophe:

  • climate collapse
  • new pandemics
  • global conflicts
  • critical resource shortages

The team behind the research examined demographic trends spanning the last 12,000 years. Their findings indicate that Earth's maximum carrying capacity could plummet to just two billion people, meaning the planet would only be able to sustain that many individuals. To avoid long-term extinction, the fertility rate would need to reach 2.7 children per woman—but current rates in countries like the United Kingdom and the United States fall well short, at 1.41 and 1.62 respectively.

Serious Challenges Ahead for Humanity

This projection casts doubt on hopes for steady human development in the near future. Back in 1960, a separate prediction warned of a doomsday scenario caused by overpopulation, with a supposed deadline of May 27, 2026. However, modern research suggests that the real threats facing humanity are far more complex and multifaceted.

The forecast of a potential global population decline has raised alarm among scientists and policymakers alike.

Given that factors like climate change and pandemics are already having a significant impact on people's lives, it is crucial to take action to reduce the risks tied to these dangers—ensuring a sustainable future for generations to come.
