Implementation of Starlink satellite internet in Lufthansa

The airline Lufthansa has made its first flight of an aircraft equipped with Starlink satellite internet. The Starlink antenna has been installed on an Airbus A320neo with registration number D-AINM, which operates flights across Europe. This new initiative is part of Lufthansa's fleet modernization program that will significantly enhance the quality of passenger service.

By the end of 2026, Lufthansa plans to install Starlink on another 10 aircraft in its own fleet and on the Lufthansa City fleet. Furthermore, by 2029, there are plans to equip the entire combined fleet of the Lufthansa Group, which consists of about 850 aircraft, with Starlink. The modernization of the aircraft will be carried out during scheduled maintenance, allowing for the efficient integration of new technologies.

Access and cost of internet on board

Access to Starlink on board will be free, provided that passengers register in the Miles & More or Travel ID programs. Registration in these programs is free. Currently, most Lufthansa airplanes and those of its subsidiaries are equipped with Flynet satellite internet, for which passengers have to pay. On European routes, Flynet with speeds up to 4 Mbps costs:

  • 6 euros for flights up to 90 minutes;
  • 8 euros for flights over 90 minutes;

On long-haul routes, Flynet costs from 15 euros for two hours or from 25 euros for the entire flight.

It is important to note that the program includes not only Lufthansa but several other airlines, such as:

  • Lufthansa City;
  • SWISS;
  • Austrian Airlines;
  • Brussels Airlines;
  • ITA Airways;
  • Edelweiss;
  • Discover Airlines;
  • Air Dolomiti;
  • Eurowings.

This indicates the widespread adoption of new technologies within the Lufthansa group, which aims to improve its passenger service.

The implementation of Starlink satellite internet in the Lufthansa fleet is part of a global trend towards enhancing the passenger experience during air travel.

With new possibilities for accessing wireless internet, passengers will enjoy convenience for work and relaxation during flights, which can positively impact the overall assessment of the airline's service. This can also become a competitive advantage for Lufthansa in its battle with other airlines that are also implementing the latest technologies in servicing their passengers.

As Lufthansa embarks on this innovative journey with Starlink, it's worth noting that this satellite internet service is rapidly gaining traction across the aviation industry. In fact, over 1,400 commercial aircraft worldwide have already integrated free Starlink internet, showcasing the growing commitment of airlines to enhance passenger connectivity and experience. This trend reflects a significant shift towards modernizing in-flight services.
