Alexander Lukashenko has publicly disparaged the state of Belarusian football, stating he sees no reason to pay it special attention at this time. His remarks were disseminated by the pro-government Telegram channel Pool of the First. Speaking at a meeting focused on hockey development on June 16, Lukashenko elaborated:
“If football players start performing the way hockey players do, I would gladly turn my attention to football as well. But for now, there’s nothing worth watching.”
He also emphasized the importance of both football and hockey as mass participation sports: “Football and hockey are the main sports everywhere. Because they are mass sports. They are people’s sports.”
