Luxembourg and international support for Ukraine's energy sector
Luxembourg announced an additional contribution of 8 million euros to the Ukraine Energy Support Fund. The total contribution from this country to the Fund now amounts to 30 million euros. Additionally, new contributions from Estonia and Spain totaled over 55,500 euros. The Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs transferred 25,000 euros, while the Spanish Embassy in Ukraine sent over 30,600 euros under the project "Emergency Energy Solidarity with Ukraine" through the Ukraine Development Assistance Association. Estonia's total contribution to the Fund exceeds 2.6 million euros, while Spain's is 4.5 million euros.
Creation of the Fund and its significance
The Ukraine Energy Support Fund was established in the spring of 2022 in agreement with the European Commission and the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine. Since its inception, the Fund has received over 2 billion euros in grant funding from 39 foreign donors from 26 partner countries and 3 international organizations.
Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal expressed gratitude to the government of Luxembourg and the Development Cooperation Agency for their systematic support of the Ukrainian energy sector. He noted that the additional contribution to the Fund would enable energy companies to acquire necessary equipment and strengthen the resilience of the energy system.
“Together with our partners, we continue to work to ensure that Ukrainian communities and businesses are provided with light and heat despite all the challenges of the war,” emphasized Shmyhal.
Moreover, he mentioned that the new contributions provide additional opportunities for quick responses to the needs of the Ukrainian energy sector, helping to procure necessary equipment and prepare the energy system for the upcoming winter.
“We highly appreciate the solidarity of our friends, which helps strengthen Ukraine's energy resilience,” added the Prime Minister.
This contribution from Luxembourg, as well as support from Estonia and Spain, underscores the importance of international solidarity in the context of Ukraine's energy security. Given the challenges posed by the war, such financial support is critically important for stabilizing the country's energy infrastructure, allowing Ukraine to better prepare for the winter season. The increasing number of partners joining the Fund reflects international recognition of Ukraine's energy needs and the necessity for prompt responses to these challenges.
In addition to Luxembourg's support, other nations are also stepping up to assist Ukraine in enhancing its winter readiness. For instance, Iceland has allocated €550,000 to bolster preparations for the cold season, highlighting the collaborative international efforts to ensure the resilience of Ukraine's energy infrastructure during challenging times.
