Diet, Not Drugs: How a Ketogenic Approach Saved a Lviv Baby from Severe Epilepsy

Здорове харчування замість лікарських засобів: Досвід рятування малюка з Львова від тяжкої епілепсії за допомогою кетогенної дієти.

Breakthrough in Treating an Infant’s Severe Epilepsy

Doctors in Lviv have successfully treated a baby girl named Daryna from Stryi, who suffered from a severe form of epilepsy, by putting her on a ketogenic diet. Born at just 28 weeks of pregnancy, she was later diagnosed with a severe epileptic condition. After standard anticonvulsant medications and hormone therapy failed to control her seizures, the medical team turned to an alternative approach.

Ketogenic Diet as an Alternative Therapy

When Daryna reached four months of age, the hospital’s keto team introduced a classic ketogenic diet. Her mother closely monitored urine ketone levels and blood glucose, and even weighed every portion of food on specialized scales. The medical staff and a dietitian adjusted the meal plan according to the baby’s changing needs. This dietary therapy is often used when conventional epilepsy treatments prove ineffective.

After four months on the diet, Daryna’s seizures stopped completely. Doctors also noted significant improvements in her brain function. As of the time of this report, the child has been seizure-free for more than six months.

'Before, her brain was overloaded, like a phone infected with a virus… Once that tension disappeared, she became more alert and developed a grasping reflex. It was as if she had been unlocked.' Victoria, Daryna’s mother

Dr. Olena Lisova, a pediatric neurologist, emphasized: 'On the ketogenic diet, Daryna not only stopped having seizures—we also saw positive changes in her cognitive development… and encouraging progress in her physical development.' This case demonstrates how a carefully managed diet can serve as a powerful tool against severe infant epilepsy, highlighting the potential of non-pharmacological interventions in challenging medical situations.

This story underscores the value of innovative medical approaches, especially when treating complex pediatric conditions. The ketogenic diet, long known for its role in epilepsy management, may offer hope to parents seeking alternatives after standard therapies fall short. Daryna’s recovery could also drive further research into the clinical use of such diets for children with epilepsy and other neurological disorders.
