IAEA Confirms Attack on Iranian Nuclear Facility, Halting Heavy Water Production

Міжнародне агентство з атомної енергії підтвердило напад на ядерний об'єкт в Ірані, що призвело до зупинки виробництва важкої води.

Heavy Water Plant in Iran Suspends Operations After Attack

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has verified that Iran's heavy water production plant in Khondab has been shut down. According to Tehran, the facility was attacked on March 27, an act for which Israel has claimed responsibility. Based on its independent analysis of satellite imagery and data, the IAEA confirmed the plant sustained significant damage. Heavy water, with the chemical formula D2O, is used as a moderator in certain types of nuclear reactors. The IAEA noted that no declared nuclear materials were present at the site at the time of the incident.

Strike Reported at Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant

Separately, Iran's atomic energy organization reported an attack on the Bushehr nuclear power plant, located in the west of the country. Official reports state that a projectile struck within the plant's perimeter. The Iranian side asserts there were no resulting financial, technical, or human losses. The IAEA also confirmed it was informed about the projectile impacting the power station's grounds.

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi has expressed profound concern regarding Iran's nuclear program. He noted that Iran has accumulated uranium enriched to near-weapons-grade levels and is not providing the agency's inspectors with full access.

'I have been very clear and consistent in my reports on Iran's nuclear program: while there is no evidence that Iran is building a nuclear bomb, its large stockpile of uranium enriched to near-weapons-grade, coupled with its refusal to grant my inspectors full access, is a serious cause for concern,' Grossi emphasized.

These developments highlight escalating regional tensions driven not only by military strikes but also by nuclear safety and security issues. The suspension of heavy water production and the attack on a nuclear power station underscore the risks associated with Iran's nuclear activities and the state of international relations in this sphere. The IAEA's and the international community's response to these incidents could significantly influence the future trajectory of nuclear policy in the region. The situation remains a focal point for global non-proliferation efforts.

As tensions rise in the region, understanding the broader implications of these attacks on Iran's nuclear facilities is crucial. Recent reports indicate that despite the escalation, no significant damage was noted at other nuclear sites, which raises questions about the overall security of Iran's nuclear program amid these military actions.
