Nuclear Safety Monitoring in Ukraine
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has wrapped up its latest inspection mission at facilities operated by NPC Ukrenergo. Inspectors examined high-voltage substations that are essential for the operation of Ukraine's nuclear power plants. During the mission, experts documented and recorded the aftermath of Russian missile and drone strikes on these substations.
Since the start of the full-scale invasion, Russia has launched 155 attacks on substations that are critical to Ukraine's nuclear safety. The IAEA team also visited the external radiation monitoring laboratory at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant following reports of a drone attack. During the inspection, the team noted damage to the facility's infrastructure.
“Inspectors recorded and documented the consequences of Russian missile and drone attacks on high-voltage substations that supply power and support the internal needs of Ukraine’s nuclear power plants.”
Vitaliy Zaychenko, Chairman of the Board of Ukrenergo
The completion of this IAEA monitoring mission underscores the need for international oversight of nuclear safety in Ukraine amid the ongoing armed conflict. Regular inspections of critical infrastructure not only help document the impact of attacks but also enable the global community to respond appropriately to threats arising from military operations.
This mission could serve as a significant step toward tightening international sanctions against the aggressor and enhancing regional security.
The situation remains critical as the IAEA continues to monitor the impact of ongoing military actions on nuclear facilities. Following the recent inspection, the agency reported damage to the infrastructure at the Zaporizhzhia lab, further illustrating the vulnerabilities faced by Ukraine's nuclear power sector.
