Solar Storm Forecast for May 29–30: What Ukraine Can Expect

Прогнозовані сонячні спалахи та їх вплив на Україну 29-30 травня: що слід знати.

Geomagnetic Storm Outlook for May 29–30

Forecasters at the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) have issued their latest assessment for geomagnetic activity over the next two days. They measure solar disturbances using the planetary K-index, a scale from 0 to 9. Readings of 5 or higher signal a strong magnetic storm, which can disrupt technology and affect human health.

On May 29, solar activity is expected to register a K-index of 3.3, placing it in the green zone. This means geomagnetic conditions will remain minor, as fluctuations between K-index 1 and 4 fall into that classification. The following day, May 30, the forecast predicts a K-index of 2.3, also within the green level. Keep in mind that these predictions can shift, since researchers update their data every three hours.

How Magnetic Storms Affect the Body

A magnetic storm arises from solar flares and eruptions on the Sun. The core of this solar energy consists of charged particles, mainly protons and electrons. Storms exceeding K-index 5 are classified as red-level events. When the K-index reaches 7 or 8, auroras become visible, and changes in atmospheric pressure have been recorded.

For those sensitive to these phenomena, following certain guidelines may help ease symptoms:

  • Maintain a consistent daily routine and diet, prioritizing quality sleep and nutritious food.
  • Avoid spicy, salty, fatty dishes, alcohol, and reduce coffee intake.
  • Drink herbal teas and stay well-hydrated with water.
  • Take walks outdoors—ideally outside the city—while avoiding direct sunlight.
  • Engage in light physical activity to boost energy and well-being.
  • Rest more and keep necessary medications on hand if you have chronic conditions.
  • Take a contrast shower in the morning to invigorate, and a relaxing bath in the evening.
  • Avoid arguments and stressful situations.

A drop in geomagnetic activity to minor levels can be welcome news, especially for those who are sensitive to space weather. Knowing the forecast in advance allows people to prepare for potential physical and psychological effects. Timely advice on managing symptoms can help reduce the negative impact of magnetic storms on the body. Scientists will continue monitoring solar activity and its influence on Earth.
