French President Declines Role in New Peace Body

French President Emmanuel Macron has decided not to join a newly proposed Peace Council, an initiative launched by U.S. President Donald Trump. This move highlights a divergence in diplomatic strategy between key Western allies. The council's stated aim is to facilitate the peaceful resolution of conflicts, including the ongoing war in Gaza.

Russia Considers the Invitation

In a contrasting development, Russian President Vladimir Putin has received an invitation to join the body, a prospect that has garnered interest in Moscow. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed the invitation, stating:

“Yes, indeed, President Putin has also received an invitation via diplomatic channels to join the Peace Council. We are currently studying all the details of this proposal, including hoping for contacts with the American side to clarify all the nuances.” - Dmitry Peskov

Russia is therefore considering participation in this new structure, which could serve as a potential platform for diplomatic negotiations.

The Peace Council is being formed on Trump's initiative, with a plan requiring nations to pay one billion dollars for permanent membership. The U.S. President is slated to be its first chairman, with the body intended to become a key instrument for international stability. Its core operating principles are designed to include:

  • one country, one vote;
  • decisions requiring approval from the chairman.

Additionally, the creation of a dedicated Peace Council for Ukraine is planned, underscoring the focus on conflict resolution in that region.

Macron's refusal to participate signals France's desire to maintain autonomy in its foreign policy, reflecting differing European and American approaches to peacebuilding. The invitation to Putin could lead to new diplomatic initiatives, though his potential involvement raises questions about Russia's influence on peace processes given its role in other conflicts. The proposed council for Ukraine further emphasizes the international urgency of finding a path to stability there.
