Macron’s Strategy for the G7 Summit

French President Emmanuel Macron is exploring ways to ensure U.S. President Donald Trump stays involved during the G7 summit scheduled for June 15–17 in Évian-les-Bains, France. Possible tactics include a private dinner at the Palace of Versailles or a game of golf. Trump’s attendance is 'almost confirmed,' and the invitation to Versailles is part of Macron’s broader plan to 'impress and flatter' the American leader.

Concerns and Preparations

Paris is worried that Trump might leave early or derail talks on key issues, including Russia’s war against Ukraine and the situation concerning Iran. As one European official noted,

“the main idea is to play on Trump’s fondness for flashy gilded interiors.”
Évian also features a golf course, offering another informal setting for interaction.

Additionally, Switzerland will deploy roughly 4,000 troops to bolster security ahead of the G7 summit. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also plans to attend, highlighting the importance of international negotiations amid current global challenges. Discussions among G7 leaders will also focus on Iran and U.S. tariff policies.

The G7 summit in Évian promises to be a critical platform for addressing key issues affecting global security and the economy. By emphasizing personal meetings with Trump, Macron aims to foster a friendly atmosphere that could lead to productive dialogue. The participation of other world leaders, including Volodymyr Zelenskyy, underscores the urgency of security and stability in today’s challenging environment.

As Macron seeks to engage Trump during the G7 summit, the anticipated meeting between Trump and Zelenskyy will further highlight the critical discussions on international security and cooperation. This interaction underscores the importance of collaboration among global leaders in addressing pressing issues, including the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
