Macron Convenes EU Leaders to Discuss Potential Social Media Ban for Minors

Макрон збирає лідерів ЄС для обговорення можливого обмеження доступу дітей до соціальних мереж.

EU Leaders to Hold Video Summit on Social Media Restrictions for Young People

French President Emmanuel Macron will host a video conference with European Union leaders to debate a potential ban on social media access for minors. This meeting reflects growing European anxiety over the impact of digital platforms on youth mental health and safety. France itself intends to prohibit children under 15 from using social media starting in September 2026. The participants will include:

  • European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen,
  • Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez,
  • representatives from Italy, the Netherlands, and Ireland.

The primary goal of the summit is to forge a unified European strategy for protecting children from the risks associated with social networks. As stated by the Élysée Palace,

“The main objective is to act in a coordinated manner and to push the European Commission, in the positive sense of the word, to move forward at the same pace as the member states.”

Additional Child Protection Measures Planned

In a related move, France also plans to extend its ban on mobile phone use in schools. Switzerland has similarly announced its intention to implement additional measures to shield children from social media-related dangers. These initiatives aim to safeguard the younger generation amidst the rising dominance of digital platforms.

This high-level discussion underscores the escalating concern among European nations regarding social media's influence on children and adolescents. Coordinated efforts by EU member states could lead to a harmonized policy framework, which would help ensure greater safety for young people online. A crucial part of this process involves sharing best practices between countries to identify optimal solutions for protecting children from the potential hazards of social media use.
