Marco Rubio's Address at the Munich Security Conference

At the Munich Security Conference, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio discussed peace negotiations with Russia and ongoing support for Ukraine. He noted that the parties have managed to narrow down the list of issues where consensus was previously lacking. However, Rubio also underscored the uncertainty surrounding the Kremlin's intentions, pointing out that the most difficult question remains: whether Russia is genuinely prepared to end its war against Ukraine. The Munich conference is a key annual forum where Western leaders and allies coordinate their security policy.

“We don't yet know if they are ready. They say they are, of course. But we don't know on what terms they are prepared to end this war, and whether we can find a compromise acceptable to Ukraine,” stated Marco Rubio.

Economic Pressure on Russia and Military Aid for Ukraine

Washington continues to apply economic pressure on Russia, including imposing additional sanctions on the Russian oil sector. Rubio also reported that promises were made in New Delhi to halt purchases of Russian oil.

Regarding military support for Ukraine, the PURL financing program is actively functioning, facilitating the sale of American weaponry to Ukraine. Last week, military officials from both sides participated in the talks for the first time, indicating the growing seriousness of the negotiation process.

Marco Rubio will be in Germany from February 13 to 15, and will then visit Bratislava and Budapest from February 15 to 16. In Bratislava, he plans to meet with key members of the Slovak government, and in Budapest with key Hungarian officials. These visits aim to strengthen cooperation with allies on security matters and support for Ukraine amidst Russia's ongoing aggression. His itinerary highlights the U.S. focus on maintaining unity among NATO and EU partners in Eastern Europe.

The continuation of talks between the U.S., Russia, and Ukraine, alongside intensified military support from Washington, underscores the gravity of the situation in the region. Rubio's visits to Slovakia and Hungary emphasize U.S. efforts to bolster European security and sustain support for Ukraine, which remains a crucial element in countering Russian aggression. The additional sanctions against Russia also signal Washington's intent to maintain pressure on the Kremlin while peace negotiations are ongoing.
