Perseverance Rover Reaches a Major Milestone

On June 14, NASA's Perseverance rover achieved a marathon-length trek across the Martian surface. This accomplishment makes it only the second rover to hit such a significant milestone on another world, following in the tracks of Opportunity, which completed a similar feat back in 2015. With a top speed of just 0.1 miles per hour, Perseverance’s journey underscores the deliberate, methodical pace of its exploratory mission.

Opportunity needed 11 years and 2 months to cover the same marathon distance. As Perseverance continues its work and expands its routes, it is now setting its sights on even more ambitious goals, including an ultramarathon.

“Drawing on the experience of four previous rover missions, the Perseverance team always knew ours would be a marathon, not a sprint,” said Steve Lee, acting project manager for Perseverance at NASA.

This achievement was made possible through extensive research and careful route planning.

“We … hit the marathon mark. Our selfie might show a little dust on the rover, but its beauty goes beyond the surface. Perseverance is in excellent shape,” Lee added.

For context, the Curiosity rover, which has been operating on Mars since 2012, has also posted impressive numbers, covering just over 23 miles. Notably, on April 25, 2026, Curiosity drilled into a rock called Atacama, lifting a 13-kilogram stone slab during the process. The outlook for further Mars research remains promising, with an ultramarathon potentially serving as Perseverance’s next major target after reaching the marathon distance. The rover continues its mission, drawing attention to the possibilities of exploring other planets in our solar system.
