Major Attack Strikes Kyiv
Kyiv was subjected to a major assault on the night of February 12, resulting in widespread power outages and infrastructure damage. The attack left thousands of homes without electricity and heating. In total, 107,000 households in the capital lost power, with emergency blackouts implemented in the Desnianskyi district that were not part of any scheduled outages.
Consequences of the Strike
The aftermath of the attack was recorded at three locations in the Dniprovskyi and Darnytskyi districts, where two people were injured. In Darnytskyi district, debris from an unmanned aerial vehicle damaged the facade of an apartment building, and a drone's jet engine was found inside one of the flats. Over 1,100 buildings in Kyiv remain without heating due to critical damage to the Darnytsia Thermal Power Plant, owned by LLC 'Euro-Reconstruction'. In total, nearly 2,500 buildings in the capital were left without heat.
Representatives from the company DTEK stated:
"Another difficult night for the energy sector. Due to the mass attack, part of the buildings in the Desnianskyi district were left without electricity. Energy workers immediately restored power to critical infrastructure facilities." - DTEK
This situation presents yet another challenge for Kyiv's energy workers and local authorities amid the ongoing conflict. These attacks are part of a sustained campaign targeting Ukraine's civilian infrastructure, which has intensified during the winter months.
This attack is part of a broader strategy of aggression that has continued over recent months, highlighting the vulnerability of energy infrastructure under wartime conditions. Restoring electricity and heat supply will require significant effort and resources, as the damage may have long-term consequences for the capital's residents. Given the current situation, the importance of ensuring energy security and protecting critical infrastructure is becoming increasingly urgent.
