Kyiv Targeted in Major January 24th Assault
Kyiv suffered a massive attack on January 24th, resulting in severe damage to the city's energy infrastructure. The assault left parts of the capital without electricity, with the most critical situation reported in the Desnianskyi district. The energy company DTEK announced it had switched to emergency operating modes due to a critical power shortage in Kyiv's grid. This attack is part of a wider Russian campaign targeting Ukraine's civilian energy infrastructure, particularly during the harsh winter months.
The strike left nearly 6,000 residential buildings without heating. Most of these buildings had already been reconnected twice following previous attacks on January 9th and 20th. To prioritize essential services, power is being restored first to critical infrastructure sites. DTEK noted that scheduled blackout rotations are currently not in effect, and repair crews are working around the clock despite difficult weather conditions.
Metro Service Disrupted and Families Impacted
The attack also forced changes to the metro system's operations. The closed stations include Lisova, Chernihivska, Hidropark, and Dnipro. It is known that physical damage to a fence occurred on the green metro line as a result of the overnight bombardment. Two routes are currently running: the first from Akademmistechko to Arsenalna with 7–9 minute intervals, and the second from Darnytsia via Livoberezhna to Arsenalna with 12-minute intervals.
88,000 Kyiv families were temporarily left without power following the mass attack. This marks another severe night for the energy sector, and DTEK emphasizes it is working as fast as possible to restore electricity to residents' homes.
This bombardment is part of an ongoing conflict that continues to negatively impact the infrastructure of Ukrainian cities, particularly energy resources. Restoring electricity and heating during the winter period is critically important for ensuring a normal life for the capital's residents. DTEK and other services are working to address the consequences of the attack, but the situation remains complex due to the constant threat of new strikes.
