Widespread Russian Missile and Drone Strike Targets Ukraine
During the night leading into October 14, Ukraine was hit by an extensive Russian missile and drone assault that severely damaged key energy and oil-and-gas facilities. This attack caused power outages affecting more than 600,000 people. In Kyiv, the capital, the strike resulted in the deaths of three civilians and injuries to 22 others.
The Russian military launched a barrage comprising 39 ballistic missiles alongside over 120 attack drones and loitering munitions. The primary targets included:
- 26 components of the electrical power system
- 4 sites within the oil and gas infrastructure
The missiles deployed in this operation consisted of several types:
- Iskander-M
- KH-23
- S-400
- Zircon
- Onyx
Launch zones for these missiles were located across Russia’s Kursk, Bryansk, Voronezh, and Rostov regions.
In addition to missiles, 128 attack drones were used, including 77 jet-powered Shahed drones, as well as Banderol/Dan-T, Gerbera, Italmas drones, and imitation drones known as "Parodiya." These unmanned aerial vehicles approached from multiple directions, targeting areas such as:
- Millerovo
- Orel (Russia)
- Russian-occupied Donetsk
- Occupied Crimea – Hvardiiske
- The Azov Sea area
By 9:00 AM, Ukrainian air defenses had successfully intercepted or neutralized 119 incoming threats, which included:
- 4 ballistic missiles
- 115 enemy drones (59 of which were jet-powered)
This interception rate accounts for 90% of the total attacking drones. Missile and drone impacts were recorded across 22 locations, while debris from downed targets fell in 8 separate areas. Several enemy missiles failed to reach their intended objectives.
The assault caused significant damage to Kyiv’s energy infrastructure and surrounding region, disrupting electrical supply. Structural damage was also reported in several districts of the capital, forcing temporary suspension of parts of the city’s public transportation system.
“This was a deliberate Russian ballistic strike targeting the energy sector, which the U.S. President had called for a ceasefire on. The scale and precision of this attack demonstrate a level of defiance toward the United States unseen before.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy
The Ukrainian Air Force emphasized that the strike was primarily focused on Kyiv, Kyiv region, and Kharkiv region. They highlighted the simultaneous use of various air attack systems from multiple directions, with a concentration of ballistic missiles aimed at energy infrastructure.
This latest wave of attacks marks a further escalation in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The targeting of vital infrastructure signals Russia’s intent to increase pressure on both the Ukrainian government and civilian population, raising concerns about worsening humanitarian and economic impacts. In response, Ukraine’s defense forces continue to enhance their capabilities to counter such threats, which remains crucial for the country’s overall security.
