Tourist Illnesses Reported at Bukovel Resort
An outbreak of mass poisonings has been recorded among tourists in Ukraine's Carpathian Mountains, particularly around the popular Bukovel ski resort. Ukrainian MP Ihor Fris has urged vacationers to carefully inspect the water sources in their hotels before using the water. Tourists have reported water quality issues along the stretch from Mykulychyn to Yasinya. This region is a major winter sports destination, making such health concerns particularly alarming for the local tourism industry.
Despite Bukovel operating its own water supply, treatment, purification, and storage systems—with water quality samples taken twice daily, analyzed, and the results archived—complaints of poisoning have still reached the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. This suggests a potential failure in the system or contamination after treatment.
Reported Symptoms and Precautions
Affected tourists have described symptoms including:
- Severe diarrhea
- Vomiting
- High fever
- General weakness
Some tourists reported taking basic safety measures, such as using bottled water and antiseptics, yet still fell ill.
Ihor Fris emphasized the critical need to verify water sources, stating: 'If you are not assured that this is central water from the Bukovel resort networks—consider whether you are prepared to contract some nasty illness.'
The situation has caused concern not only among tourists but also local authorities. Ensuring high safety standards in resort areas is paramount, as both the region's reputation and its economy depend on visitor trust. Such incidents can significantly impact tourist numbers, making water quality and food safety a top priority for local management.
