On July 12, a real ecological catastrophe occurred in the village of Novopokrovka in the Dnipro district of the Dnipropetrovsk region – a mass die-off of fish. Local residents claim that they collected more than five tons of dead fish in just one day. Renowned ichthyologist Oleg Marenko explained what this disaster means for the green inhabitants of our planet.

The village of Novopokrovka is located near the river Komyshuvata Sura, where droughts often occur in the summer. This hydrological feature disrupts the ecosystem, especially under high-temperature conditions. The local fish protection patrol recorded the catastrophe, but specialists found no signs of external interference or wastewater discharge, so it can be assumed that the cause was natural impact.

Oleg Marenko said: 'The fish die-off in Novopokrovka is the result of combined stress on the aquatic ecosystem: high temperature, oxygen deficiency, and eutrophication. Such cases will become more common in the context of climate change, global warming, and the loss of water resources, so systematic measures for monitoring, forecasting, and aeration are necessary.'

The documented mass fish die-off in the village of Novopokrovka indicates serious problems in aquatic ecosystems and highlights the need for improved monitoring and nature protection amid climate change and rising temperatures.
