Widespread Power Failures Strike Ukraine and Moldova
Major emergency power outages have hit Ukraine and parts of Moldova, causing the metro systems in Kyiv and Kharkiv to shut down and disrupting water supplies. Authorities in Ukraine implemented emergency blackouts across Kyiv, the surrounding region, and numerous other areas. This drastic measure was a response to severe failures within the electrical grid that impacted both nations. Metro Halted and Water Services Disrupted
Metro operations in Kyiv and Kharkiv came to a complete standstill due to the voltage drop. In Kyiv, trains stopped after losing power from external supply centers, leaving escalators inoperative. A similar technical failure halted all train movement in Kharkiv.
Vitali Klitschko stated: 'Metro traffic has been stopped due to low voltage in the network. Underground metro stations can currently operate as shelters (on the stations' backup power).'
Water supply issues have been reported in Kyiv, Kharkiv, and other cities. Emergency power cuts have been applied in nearly all regions of Ukraine, severely complicating daily life. Parts of Moldova, including the capital, also experienced a blackout. Moldova's Ministry of Energy attributed the outage to serious problems in Ukraine's power system, specifically a voltage drop on the 400 kV Isaccea-Vulcănești-Moldavskaya GRES power line that occurred on January 31. This drop damaged and disconnected parts of the energy system, worsening the regional crisis. The incident highlights the broader energy security challenges facing the region amidst ongoing instability.
