Massive Power Outage Grips Moldova Following Ukrainian Grid Failure

Масштабне відключення електроенергії у Молдові після неблагополуччя в українській енергосистемі.

Nationwide Blackout in Moldova

A major power failure struck the Republic of Moldova on January 31, 2026, triggered by a critical accident within Ukraine's energy grid. The blackout affected numerous areas across the country, including the capital city of Chișinău and the Transnistrian region. This emergency shutdown resulted from severe technical faults in neighboring Ukraine's power network, which caused a sudden and drastic voltage drop on the Isaccea–Vulcănești–MGRES transmission line. Moldova's energy infrastructure is heavily interconnected with Ukraine's, making it vulnerable to such cross-border disruptions.

The incident occurred at 10:42 AM local time when the voltage on the critical line collapsed, subsequently damaging Moldova's own electrical system. Energy Minister Dorin Janguțiu confirmed the details. The national transmission system operator, Moldelectrica, immediately initiated emergency recovery operations to restore power supply to the nation.

Infrastructure Impact and Official Response

The electricity cut-off impacted most sectors of Chișinău and numerous settlements in the Transnistrian region. Consequently, the capital's subway system temporarily suspended all passenger services due to a critically low voltage supply from external power sources. Trains halted on all metro lines, and escalators within the stations were switched off.

Authorities urgently convened responsible officials to assess the escalating situation. Decisions were made to deploy backup generators where essential, and police were requested to direct traffic at intersections where traffic lights had failed. Trolleybus services were suspended in many districts. Citizens were advised to remain calm during this complex crisis.

The National Crisis Management Center noted that adverse weather conditions, which could have affected grid stability, were linked to the power outage. The situation remains fluid as authorities continue to work on a resolution.

This blackout in Moldova underscores the vulnerability of regional power grids that depend on neighboring countries. A loss of electricity has far-reaching consequences for the functioning of cities and villages, as well as for the economy, since supply disruptions can impact business sectors and the daily lives of citizens.
