Mother of Farion Murder Suspect Appeals to Ombudsman Over Son's Fifth Day of Hunger Strike

Мати підозрюваного у вбивстві Фаріон звернулася до омбудсмена через п’ятий день голодування сина.

Appeal from Vyacheslav Zinchenko's Mother

Olena Zinchenko, the mother of Vyacheslav Zinchenko—who is accused of murdering linguist Iryna Farion—has appealed to Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights Dmytro Lubinets regarding her son's detention conditions. Vyacheslav Zinchenko is now on a hunger strike, which has entered its fifth day, and he is also refusing water.

Olena Zinchenko reported that her son's health is deteriorating due to the prolonged strike. She stated:

“Yesterday he said he wasn't feeling well, as it's already the fifth day he has been on a hunger strike without water. I initially thought he was drinking water because he asked for it to be delivered. Yesterday he said he hadn't drunk a single drop.”

Vyacheslav's mother also expressed concern about his access to medical care if needed:

“I called the Human Rights Commissioner, Dmytro Lubinets—I asked for help. Because you cannot dry hunger strike for long. He has never done a hunger strike before.”

The Case and Its Implications

Vyacheslav Zinchenko, who is 18 years old, faces a potential life sentence. His case concerns the murder of Iryna Farion, a prominent linguist and former MP, who died in hospital on the evening of July 19, 2024, following an attack on Masaryk Street in Lviv. The assailant was unknown at the time. Prosecutors from the Lviv Regional Prosecutor's Office have completed the pre-trial investigation and submitted an indictment against Vyacheslav Zinchenko to the court.

Olena Zinchenko has permission to visit her son the day after her appeal. She noted: “I have permission, I am going to see him tomorrow—I will see what condition he is in. But he told me he doesn't know if he will be able to come. It depends on how he feels. The situation is very difficult.” She is currently awaiting a response from the ombudsman regarding further steps, stating, “unfortunately, everything does not happen quickly.”

The situation with Vyacheslav Zinchenko has raised concerns not only within his family but also among human rights organizations monitoring detention conditions. The declared hunger strike, against the backdrop of serious charges, raises questions about the observance of human rights in pre-trial detention centers and the availability of medical assistance in critical situations.

The Zinchenko case, which has already attracted significant public attention, continues to unfold, and the outcome of the investigation and trial could have far-reaching consequences for all parties involved.

As the situation surrounding Vyacheslav Zinchenko escalates, many are drawing parallels to the ongoing protests outside the court, where supporters have rallied for the accused in the Farion murder case.
