Is the MBA Obsolete? How Artificial Intelligence is Reshaping Business Education

Штучний інтелект: новий погляд на освіту в бізнесі та роль MBA у сучасному світі.

Mounting Criticism of Traditional MBA Programs

Serhiy Bondarenko, founder of the IT company Skywell, has voiced strong criticism of classic MBA programs, arguing they are failing to keep pace with the rapid evolution of the modern world. He points out that the reliance on purely academic instructors and the fact that business case studies can now be solved using artificial intelligence, such as ChatGPT, no longer meets the needs of today's entrepreneurs.

Bondarenko, a Ukrainian entrepreneur, noted that even prestigious Western institutions like Stanford are not immune to this issue. Reflecting on his own educational experience in 2016, he observed that the core teaching methodology has remained stagnant. The MBA, a long-standing credential for corporate leadership, is facing unprecedented pressure from technological disruption.

'I worked through those same case studies back in 2016 when I was a student. A decade has passed, right? I asked her, 'Do any actual entrepreneurs ever come to share their experiences?' The answer was no.' - Serhiy Bondarenko

The Urgent Need for Curriculum Modernization

Bondarenko also expressed skepticism about the ability of individuals who have never built a business to teach others how to do so: 'I fundamentally don't understand how people who have never built a business can lecture on business building. To me, that's somewhat nonsensical.'

He emphasized that the business world has undergone a significant transformation since the emergence of ChatGPT three years and five months ago, a tool that has democratized access to complex analysis and strategy generation.

'Just three years ago, this level of AI wasn't even available, right? ChatGPT appeared three years and five months ago. In another three years, the world will be completely different. This technology will evolve even faster.' - Serhiy Bondarenko

In the entrepreneur's view, modern technology allows business problems to be tackled far more efficiently. 'You can solve business tasks and case studies right now with ChatGPT. You can create an AI agent and work on business problems with it around the clock, as much as you want,' added Bondarenko.

Serhiy Bondarenko's critical remarks highlight a pressing issue: the need for education to adapt to contemporary business demands, especially amid breakneck technological advancement. Given the swift changes driven by artificial intelligence, educational institutions may soon face the necessity of overhauling their programs to remain competitive and relevant. This underscores the critical importance of integrating practical, real-world experience and cutting-edge technology directly into the learning process.
