Melania Trump Leads Evacuation of Nearly 800 from Occupied Oleshky Amid Ceasefire Agreement

Меланія Трамп організувала вирішення проблеми майже 800 людей з окупованих територій Олещик в умовах нової угоди про припинення вогню.

Key Details on the Humanitarian Effort and Ceasefire in Russian-Occupied Oleshky

In a significant humanitarian initiative, former U.S. First Lady Melania Trump announced the evacuation of close to 800 people from Oleshky, a town temporarily under Russian occupation in the Kherson region. This mission included delivering vital humanitarian aid and establishing a temporary ceasefire to ensure safe passage. The evacuation route passed through Russian and Belarusian territories, marking a rare collaboration involving the United States, Ukraine, and Russia. Those evacuated were given the choice to resettle either in Ukraine or Russia. Notably, more than 60 animals—primarily cats and dogs—were also rescued, many of which were in poor health and received veterinary care.

This operation resulted from agreements reached between Ukraine and Russia, reaffirmed on October 23, 2026. The Ukrainian negotiating team was led by Dmytro Lubinets, while the Russian side was represented by Lantratova. To guarantee safety during the operation, a ceasefire was implemented in Oleshky on October 27. Following the clearance of mines along evacuation routes on October 29, a humanitarian convoy was assembled. Ukrainian officials arrived in Oleshky on October 30 to oversee the mission.

Security Challenges and Evacuation Process

The evacuation path through Russia and Belarus was chosen due to heightened risks along other front-line corridors. Evacuees ranged widely in age, from just over one year old to 94 years. The inclusion of pets during the evacuation highlights the mission's humanitarian focus. Over 60 animals, mostly cats and dogs, were transported and received medical attention for exhaustion and injuries.

According to the Ukrainian General Staff, Russian forces exploited the ceasefire period to conduct troop rotations, fortify their positions, enhance anti-drone defenses, and strengthen logistical support. This raised concerns about the sincerity and reliability of the ceasefire agreement.

Melania Trump expressed gratitude to both Russia and Ukraine for their cooperation in achieving the ceasefire in Oleshky, expressing hope that this could pave the way toward lasting peace between the two nations.

This humanitarian mission and the accompanying ceasefire underscore the critical role of international cooperation amid ongoing conflict. The evacuation of a large civilian population, including animals, reflects the severity of the humanitarian crisis and the urgent need for civilian protection in the area. While the successful completion of this operation marks progress toward peaceful conflict resolution and improved relations, the reported use of the ceasefire by Russian troops for strategic advantage calls the trustworthiness of the agreement into question.

As the evacuation effort unfolds, the recent ceasefire agreement has been pivotal in facilitating the safe passage of evacuees. This temporary truce, effective from October 27, aims to support humanitarian missions like the one led by Melania Trump, highlighting the urgent need for coordinated international responses in conflict zones.
