Michael Ziegler’s Volunteer Mission in Ukraine

During his autumn holiday, Michael Ziegler, mayor of the Danish municipality Høje-Taastrup, took part in a volunteer trip to Ukraine, personally delivering a Citroën Jumpy vehicle for the Ukrainian Armed Forces. While in the country, he visited Bucha and the Lukyanivka district of Kyiv, where he experienced three separate air raid alerts while staying overnight at a hotel in the capital. Ziegler is an active member of the volunteer group Biler til Ukraine, which had donated 952 vehicles to Ukraine as of September 2026.

Since the full-scale Russian invasion began, Høje-Taastrup has welcomed approximately 400 Ukrainian refugees. Twice a year, on Ukrainian Independence Day and the anniversary of the war’s escalation, Mayor Ziegler addresses these refugees to offer support. During this recent trip, the volunteer team delivered ten vehicles, with two drivers assigned to each car. The convoy traveled closely together, all with hazard lights flashing.

Navigation Challenges and Continued Support for Ukraine’s Military

It is important to note that GPS devices stopped functioning about 80 km from Kyiv due to signal jamming by Ukraine’s air defense systems. The exact location for handing over the vehicle in Kyiv remains confidential. Meanwhile, British volunteers from Mighty Convoy have supplied 111 vehicles across 26 convoys, maintaining steady aid to Ukraine’s armed forces.

At the same time, a charity event called Obráncům Ukrajiny took place in Prague, aimed at raising funds for the Ukrainian military. The event included members of the 39th Separate Battalion of Drone Systems, currently stationed in the Czech Republic. Ziegler also connected with Finnish volunteers supporting a similar cause.

Ziegler reflected, “Unlike other speeches, you can see the deep pain they carry inside. Many have tears in their eyes.”

He emphasized, “If initiatives like these exist across all European countries—where good people do what they can—it truly makes a difference.”

Such volunteer efforts highlight the broad international solidarity with Ukraine amid ongoing conflict. The work led by Ziegler and fellow volunteers not only helps supply essential equipment but also provides vital moral support to Ukrainians enduring difficult times. These collaborative actions underscore the power of unity between nations in backing Ukraine’s resilience and recovery.

As the support for Ukraine continues to grow, various volunteer groups are stepping up to provide essential resources. Recently, British volunteers from Mighty Convoy delivered five vehicles to bolster Lviv's military and humanitarian efforts. This initiative highlights the ongoing commitment from international communities to assist Ukraine during these challenging times.
