Ihor Terekhov Participates in Nordic-Ukrainian Partnership Forum
Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov, who also heads the Association of Frontline Communities, presented the needs of Ukraine's war-affected regions at the Nordic-Ukrainian Partnership Forum in Lviv. He outlined the priorities for recovery and security, highlighting that Kharkiv's population of approximately 1.3 million now includes over 213,000 internally displaced persons. The forum brought together leaders and representatives of local government associations from Ukraine, Sweden, Norway, and Finland, focusing on collaborative solutions for reconstruction.
Key Areas for Cooperation
Alongside Terekhov, the forum included representatives from communities in the Sumy, Poltava, Kharkiv, and Odesa regions. Other board members of the Association of Frontline Cities and Communities in attendance included Poltava's acting mayor, Kateryna Yamshchykovа, Sumy's acting mayor, Artem Kobzar, and Pavlohrad Mayor Anatolii Vershyna.
'These are people who have lost their homes and require comprehensive support—from housing and healthcare to education for their children. We must care for the needs of the forcibly displaced. This is our area of responsibility.' Ihor Terekhov
Terekhov emphasized the necessity for a new mindset and partnership model, stating, 'We don't just need resources. We need a new system of thinking and partnership. Primarily, we need training programs for cities and the transfer of experience from countries that have already undergone recovery after major wars.'
The key cooperation areas discussed at the forum were:
- Decentralization and protection of energy infrastructure
- Development of underground critical infrastructure
- Implementation of cutting-edge technologies
- Growth of defense manufacturing and the IT sector
'A strong society is one that can care for its people under any conditions.' Ihor Terekhov
Terekhov stressed the importance of maintaining stable city life despite constant shelling. 'We live under constant fire, yet we simultaneously ensure the operation of transport, hospitals, schools, and utility services. Our task is to ensure that life in our cities does not stop,' he added. This forum underscores the critical role of international cooperation in Ukraine's recovery, with Nordic partners offering valuable expertise from their own histories of resilience and rebuilding.
