Friedrich Merz, Chancellor of Germany, after meeting with the President of Romania, stated that Ukraine may be able to join the European Union by 2034. However, he emphasized that it is currently more important to stop the war in the country, as the process of Ukraine's recovery will take considerable time.
According to Merz, 'accession is unlikely to happen at a stage that will affect the medium-term financial plans of the bloc, projected until 2034.'
The Chancellor stressed that it is currently important to assist Ukraine in recovery and eliminate the consequences of the conflict, and only then consider possible accession prospects to the EU.
'Then we will talk about the recovery of Ukraine... but this will take a few years... It will probably not even impact the current medium-term financial outlooks of the EU,' Merz emphasized.
Friedrich Merz believes that the priority now is to stop the war in Ukraine and help the country in the recovery process after the conflict before considering possible EU accession.
