Refuting Journalist's Allegations

On October 1 at 11:33, Meta addressed and rejected claims made by journalist Jason Aten regarding unauthorized access by Muse to private messages on Mac devices. The company clarified that Muse’s integration with the Messages app requires users to grant three distinct permission levels. Meta’s Vice President of Communications, Andy Stone, along with company representative David Singleton, provided a detailed explanation of the technical requirements involved in Muse accessing messages.

How Access Permissions Work

According to Meta, for Muse to access messages on a Mac, users must explicitly complete three permission steps related to both the application and macOS system settings:

  • Grant Full Disk Access.
  • Enable the Messages connector.
  • Confirm access within the macOS settings.

Andy Stone emphasized:

“Using Messages within the Muse app on Mac is entirely optional. You must enable both Full Disk Access and the Messages connector for Muse to read your Messages content. Without these permissions, Muse cannot access your messages.”

Meta also explained that if Full Disk Access is not granted, the option to enable Messages access remains unavailable. When Full Disk Access is activated, macOS opens its settings interface for the user to manually confirm the permission. After granting Full Disk Access, the Muse app fully restarts. Meta dismissed Muse’s explanation of notification synchronization as inaccurate.

Earlier reports from users have highlighted other concerns with Muse. Notably, YouTube creator Matt Robb shared that his address was exposed to a buyer during a Facebook Marketplace transaction due to Muse’s operation. Robb later clarified that he had personally authorized Muse with the necessary permissions, which led to the data exposure.

This case highlights the critical importance of carefully managing app permissions when dealing with sensitive personal information. Users need to be vigilant about privacy settings and fully understand the access they grant, as even minor configuration choices can result in unintended data leaks. As cross-platform technologies become more widespread, safeguarding user data remains a top priority for consumers and developers alike.

In light of the recent controversy surrounding Muse's access to private messages, it's worth noting that Meta has also taken action against Muse related to its shopping capabilities. The company recently restricted Muse's access to shopping on Amazon due to violations of their terms of service, highlighting ongoing concerns about the app's compliance with user privacy and data security protocols.
