Meta and Reliance Join Forces on Indian Data Center
Meta has entered into its first agreement in India for an artificial intelligence data center, partnering with Reliance. The announcement was made on Wednesday. The deal focuses on the development of a data center in Jamnagar, which will have a capacity of 168 megawatts. Construction is expected to be completed within the next two years.
Back in 2020, Meta invested $5.7 billion in Jio Platforms. Last year, the two companies established a $100 million joint venture aimed at developing AI solutions. This agreement is part of a broader trend where international cloud service providers—including Microsoft, Amazon, Google, OpenAI, and Uber—have announced investments in AI infrastructure and cloud services in India.
India's AI Infrastructure Growth Outlook
India's installed data center capacity has surged from roughly 375 megawatts in 2020 to 1.5 gigawatts in 2025. Industry estimates suggest that the country's data center capacity could surpass 8 gigawatts by the end of the decade. Additionally, foreign cloud service providers in India may benefit from tax exemptions valid until 2047, further boosting market development.
Meta has also secured nearly 1 gigawatt of new renewable energy capacity in India through agreements with CleanMax and Fourth Partner Energy. The financial terms of the Meta-Reliance deal have not been disclosed. Meanwhile, companies like Adani and Tata Consultancy Services have announced their own plans to expand data center infrastructure in India.
Thus, Meta's partnership with Reliance not only advances artificial intelligence but also strengthens India's position as a key player in the global technology market.
Amid rising demand for computing power and cloud services, this collaboration could significantly impact the further development of AI infrastructure in the region, thereby enhancing India's competitiveness in the global tech landscape.
