Meta’s New Prediction Platform: Arena
Meta is developing a market prediction service called Arena, which has become a top priority for Mark Zuckerberg and the company. To ensure a strong launch, Meta plans to leverage its massive user base on Facebook and Instagram. Arena will operate on a points-based system similar to video game mechanics, allowing users to make predictions without using real money. However, Meta representatives have not ruled out the possibility of introducing cash wagers down the line.
Competition and Meta’s Track Record
Arena will go head-to-head with established prediction platforms like Polymarket and Kalshi, both of which have been operating for over five years. Notably, Meta already has experience in this space: in 2020, it launched a prediction app called Forecast, which also used a points system for users to forecast global events. That project was shut down in 2022 due to low engagement.
With Arena, Meta hopes to attract a larger audience and build an active community of forecasters. This move aligns with the company’s broader strategy of adapting successful third-party concepts, as it has done with Instagram Stories, Facebook Reels, Facebook Dating, and Threads. Drawing lessons from Forecast’s failure, Meta aims to avoid past mistakes and deliver a product that resonates with users.
The rollout of Arena marks a significant step in Meta’s push to develop innovative services that offer users a fresh experience in event prediction. Competing with established platforms highlights the growing interest in such services and Meta’s ambition to secure a foothold in this market.
