Weather balloons from Belarus covered Poland with cigarettes: thousands of packs found after the Christmas intrusion

У небі Польщі виявили численні сигаретні пакунки, які незабаром після Різдва опинилися там з Білорусі.

Cigarette smuggling through weather balloons

Weather balloons from Belarus that entered Polish territory on the night before Christmas led to the discovery of several thousand packs of cigarettes. According to reports, about 60 weather balloons carrying contraband flew into Polish airspace on December 25. As a result, balloons were found carrying packages of cigarettes and GPS devices.

Discovery of contraband

The majority of the contraband was recorded in the Podlaskie Voivodeship, where over 4 thousand packs of illegal cigarettes were found in the areas of Goniądz, Bohuszevo, and Zaborowo. Additionally, four cases of illegal border crossing were recorded in the Lublin Voivodeship. The balloons involved in this smuggling reached an altitude of 9 thousand meters.

It is worth noting that on the night of December 25, an intrusion of objects from Belarus into Polish airspace was also recorded. In connection with these events, Polish fighters intercepted a reconnaissance plane from the Russian Federation over international waters of the Baltic Sea. The situation regarding smuggling and airspace security remains under the control of Polish law enforcement agencies.

This incident highlights the existing problems with smuggling at the Polish border, as well as potential threats from neighboring countries.

Increased attention to the security of Polish airspace may indicate the government's efforts to protect its borders from illegal activities. The response of the Polish military to the events indicates a readiness to maintain control over the situation and prevent further smuggling attempts.
