Console Price Increases Hit Xbox Lineup
On June 26 at 2:30 PM, Microsoft announced it would raise prices on Xbox consoles in the United States. This marks the third price hike since the start of 2025. The company attributes the increases to a more than 2.5-fold surge in memory and storage costs, along with a broader component crisis affecting the consumer electronics sector.
Updated Pricing for Xbox Models
The new US prices for Xbox consoles are as follows:
- Xbox Series S (512 GB) – $500
- Xbox Series S (1 TB) – $600
- Xbox Series X Digital – $750
- Xbox Series X – $800
Previous price increases occurred in May and October of last year.
Industry forecasts suggest that component costs could double again by fall 2027. To help offset these expenses, Microsoft is offering consumers several options, including installment payment plans at its official stores and interest-free financing through Amazon. Pre-owned and certified refurbished consoles are also available.
Despite these measures, Microsoft has no plans to revive the Xbox All Access program. Additionally, a new wave of layoffs is expected at the company after the fiscal year ends on June 30. The head of Xbox Game Studios has stepped down, and studios such as Ninja Theory, Double Fine, and Compulsion Games may face reorganization.
Microsoft is not alone in raising console prices. Sony and Nintendo have taken similar steps recently. Valve has also confirmed that the component crisis has impacted the cost and availability of Steam Machines.
This round of Xbox price increases reflects a broader trend in the video game industry, where many companies are grappling with rising production costs due to component shortages and higher raw material prices.
With consumers already facing financial pressure, such decisions could affect demand and the company's competitive position in the market. Tracking consumer reactions and Microsoft's next moves will be key to understanding the full impact of these changes.
As Microsoft navigates these price adjustments, the company is also facing significant internal challenges. Following the recent resignation of senior management, mass layoffs may be on the horizon, which could further impact the Xbox division and its future strategies.
