Ukrainian Hammer Throwers Shine on the Global Stage
Ukrainian hammer thrower Mykhailo Kokhan secured a silver medal at the Gold level Continental Tour event held in Nairobi, Kenya. On his fifth attempt, Kokhan launched the hammer 81.26 meters—not only his best performance of the 2026 season but also the third-best mark of his entire career. With this achievement, he became the fifth athlete worldwide to surpass the 80-meter threshold in 2026. For context, his personal best stands at 82.02 meters, a mark he set back in 2025.
The competition was won by Canadian hammer thrower Ethan Katzberg, the reigning Olympic champion, who threw 82.43 meters on his second attempt—currently the best result in the world this season. Third place went to Czech athlete Volodymyr Myslyvchuk, who recorded a throw of 77.71 meters.
Ukrainian Athletes Continue to Impress
This event marked Kokhan's third competition of 2026 and his first victory of the season in hammer throwing. Fellow Ukrainian Iryna Klymets finished in seventh place with a first-attempt throw of 66.90 meters, which also stands as her best international result in 2026. Her previous seasonal best was 66.62 meters, achieved at the European Cup in Cyprus.
Kokhan's success on the international circuit highlights the steady progress of Ukrainian hammer throwers, reflecting a high level of training and preparation.
Despite fierce competition from world-class athletes like Ethan Katzberg, Ukrainian competitors continue to deliver impressive performances. This bodes well for their prospects in upcoming major events, including international championships and the Olympic Games.
As Ukrainian athletes continue to excel on the world stage, their achievements extend beyond hammer throwing. Recently, the nation celebrated three bronze medals at the European Wrestling Championships, showcasing the depth of talent in various sports. This momentum in athletics not only highlights individual successes but also reflects the overall strength of Ukrainian sports as they prepare for future competitions.
