The Ministry of Ecology named the amount of damage that Russia caused to Ukrainian ecology

At the International Conference on Ukraine's Recovery URC-2025 in Rome, Ukraine's Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources Svitlana Hrynchuk stated that the ecological losses from the war have already amounted to €108 billion. She emphasized that recovery is becoming a security issue not only for Ukraine but for all European countries. Chief Commander.



Hrynchuk noted that to date, more than 9,000 cases of ecological destruction due to Russia's actions have been recorded. Among the most striking cases, she mentioned the explosion of the Kakhovka dam, pollution of the Sейм River, and damage to the New Safe Confinement at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant.




  • According to Svitlana Hrynchuk, the scale of this terror makes the issue of ecological protection a matter of security for the entire continent. Therefore, Ukraine insists that recovery is necessary now, without waiting for the end of the war.



Ukraine's Initiatives for Environmental Recovery


The minister discussed key programs being implemented in Ukraine:




  • The draft law 'On Green Recovery': it implements 'green' taxonomy principles to attract sustainable investments and creates a legal basis for new financial instruments, such as 'green' bonds.

  • The Green Recovery Platform: this initiative, which started with a contribution from the German government of €5 million, has received partner support amounting to €20 million.

  • Landmine removal and nature restoration: almost 100,000 hectares of forests have already been cleared of mines in liberated territories. Pine planting using a new technology has begun in the 'Holy Mountains' National Park.

  • Rehabilitation centers for animals: these centers are not only places for biodiversity preservation but also vital support for people affected by Russian terror, particularly veterans.



Svitlana Hrynchuk urged all stakeholders to join cooperation in environmental recovery.



BEF detectives in the Chernivtsi region completed a pre-trial investigation against a local entrepreneur who failed to pay more than 4.5 million UAH in taxes while trading equipment with the European Union.



In a statement, Ukraine's Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources Svitlana Hrynchuk revealed that the war in Eastern Ukraine has led to significant losses for ecology and has become a security issue not only for the country but for the entire continent. She presented initiatives for restoring the country's natural resources and called for cooperation on this matter.
