Ukrainian Energy Ministry Denies False Claims of Impending Utility Price Hikes

Міністерство енергетики України спростувало неправдиві чутки про можливе підвищення тарифів на комунальні послуги.

Ministry and Counter-Disinformation Center Refute Tariff Increase Claims

The Ukrainian Ministry of Energy and the Center for Countering Disinformation have jointly denied circulating rumors about potential increases in electricity and heating tariffs. Ministry officials clarified that a moratorium on raising utility rates has been in effect since 2022. This freeze will remain throughout the martial law period and for an additional six months after its termination, ensuring stable prices for household heating, hot water, and gas supply.

The Ministry of Energy of Ukraine has emphasized that no decision to raise tariffs is currently under consideration. The ongoing discussion of draft law No. 13219 focuses on improving competitive conditions for green energy production, but its implementation will not affect consumer utility rates. Calculations related to renewable energy have no impact on consumer utility costs, as a fixed price for households is maintained through a mechanism placing special obligations on Energoatom and Ukrhydroenergo.

Guarding Against Disinformation Campaigns

Furthermore, the Center for Countering Disinformation reported the spread of AI-generated videos in the Ukrainian information space containing false information about tariffs. Ukrainians have also begun receiving phishing emails falsely purporting to be from the Ministry of Energy. The ministry stresses it does not conduct such mailings and urges citizens to exercise caution with such messages.

The situation regarding utility tariffs in Ukraine remains stable, despite information attacks aimed at disorienting the public.

Maintaining the tariff increase moratorium is a crucial step for supporting social stability during wartime. For citizens facing economic pressure, it is vital to critically assess information and verify its accuracy, especially amidst active disinformation campaigns that can impact personal finances and overall well-being.
