Guidance From Ukraine’s Ministry of Economy, Environment, and Agriculture

With a new heatwave forecast to hit Ukraine starting next week, the Ministry of Economy, Environment, and Agriculture has issued recommendations for safeguarding domestic animals, stray animals, and birds. Extreme temperatures pose serious risks, including rapid overheating and dehydration, which can be life-threatening for animals.

Key Tips for Caring for Pets in Hot Weather

The Ministry highlighted several essential practices for pet owners during periods of high heat:

  • Schedule walks for early morning or late evening hours;
  • Avoid vigorous play under direct, intense sunlight;
  • Always carry fresh drinking water for your pet;
  • Cool your animal by dampening its paw pads, belly, or collar with water;
  • Never leave a pet inside a closed car, even for just a few minutes;
  • Do not shave your pet completely unless a veterinarian advises it.

A full coat of fur actually provides natural insulation against overheating.

For owners of ornamental birds, the Ministry advises:

  • Move cages away from direct sunlight;
  • Ensure good airflow without creating drafts;
  • Provide a shallow dish of water for bathing.

When it comes to stray animals and wild birds, placing a bowl of clean water near your home, shop, or office—and refreshing it daily—can make a big difference. If possible, also leave out a small amount of dry food. For birds, setting up shallow water containers in shaded areas helps them cope with the heat.

As scorching temperatures approach, following the Ministry’s guidelines is crucial for the health and well-being of pets. Proper care not only lowers the risk of heatstroke but also improves animals’ overall quality of life. Extending that same attention to stray animals is an important step toward a more humane society and a healthier ecosystem.
