Sweden has become a key defense ally for Ukraine, and its defense minister recently completed his fifth trip to Kyiv since the full-scale invasion began. During the visit, Paul Jonsson highlighted that Ukrainian forces are capturing more ground than they are conceding, while Russian troops face difficulties replenishing their ranks.
“The situation is now more favorable for Ukraine’s military. We are encouraged by what they are achieving on the front: they are indeed taking more territory than they lose,” — Paul Jonsson.
He also emphasized the effectiveness of the long-range strike capabilities that Ukraine has developed over the past six months.
Sweden’s Support Package for Ukraine
Since the start of the full-scale war, Stockholm has delivered approximately €12 billion in aid to Ukraine. Data from the Kiel Institute places Sweden third globally in terms of support volume last year. All eight political parties in the Swedish parliament back the assistance packages, reflecting a unified stance on helping Ukraine.
Early next year, Ukraine is set to receive 16 Gripen C/D fighter jets, equivalent to one squadron. Additionally, an EU loan agreement has been signed to finance a Gripen E-series squadron. Jonsson explained the system’s advantages:
“The Gripen’s strength lies in its dispersion capability. It doesn’t need fixed airbases, has extremely high readiness, and possesses powerful electronic warfare systems,” — Paul Jonsson.
Swedish weapon systems were designed with the Russian military, conscription-based forces, and cold weather in mind, making them highly effective in current conditions.
Sweden has also funded five packages through the PURL mechanism, pushed the United States to supply Patriot missiles, and launched the Brave Sweden project to foster industrial cooperation. The minister noted:
- No other country with a population of 10 million can design and manufacture submarines, fighter jets, artillery systems, airborne radars, and the like.
He further remarked that Ukraine currently represents the only active defense-industrial market, which drives down costs and increases competition.
