Remarks from Ukraine’s Foreign Minister
Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha expressed surprise over recent remarks made by Hungary’s Prime Minister Péter Madjár concerning Ukraine. Notably, the Hungarian government rejected the Carpathian Integration Initiative, a project aimed at fostering regional development among eight Carpathian countries. Sybiha pointed out that the reasons behind Hungary’s firm refusal remain unclear.
Additionally, Budapest has questioned existing energy agreements between Ukraine and Hungary, which are based on a bilateral memorandum. Sybiha described these statements as yet another unexpected development for Kyiv. He emphasized that
“whenever politics interfere with pragmatic business, the outcome is rarely positive”and added,
“The messages coming from Budapest lately are puzzling”.
Hungary’s Political Landscape
Sybiha noted that although Viktor Orbán is no longer in power, his legacy of obstructionist and isolationist policies still persists.
“Orbánism has brought little benefit to Hungary or the wider region in the past—and will continue to offer no advantages in the future,”he said. At the same time, the minister reiterated Ukraine’s willingness to pursue a mutually beneficial, practical, and respectful partnership with Hungary.
The Hungarian prime minister’s remarks suggest a potential deterioration in Ukraine-Hungary relations, with possible repercussions for regional stability and energy cooperation.
