Advantages of Contract Military Service
The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense has detailed the benefits of voluntary contract service over mandatory mobilization. The key incentives include:
- The right to choose one's military unit;
- Attractive financial compensation;
- Access to a military mortgage program.
The ministry also outlined contract terms for different categories of personnel and introduced new rules for reserving employees in critical industries. This policy aims to strengthen the armed forces while managing the nation's broader wartime manpower needs.
Contract Terms and Financial Incentives
Contracts with the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) are available for terms ranging from 1 to 10 years or until a general demobilization is declared. For young people aged 18 to 25, as well as for medical workers and psychologists, there is an option to sign a contract for 1 or 2 years. A one-year contract is also available for individuals over 60. During the first six months of contract service, a soldier's chosen position is guaranteed, provided they have a recommendation letter from their unit commander.
The financial motivation includes a one-time signing bonus. In 2026, the amounts for this bonus are set at:
- 26,624 UAH for enlisted personnel;
- 29,952 UAH for sergeants and petty officers;
- 33,280 UAH for officers.
Citizens aged 18 to 25 receive a guaranteed one-year deferral from mobilization after their contract term ends.
The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has also updated the rules for reserving employees at critically important enterprises. Companies now have the right to arrange temporary reservations for up to 45 days for specialists whose military registration status is not yet fully settled. This measure is designed to support the national economy during the war by protecting the rights of essential workers.
