Moscow's Military Moves and Ukraine's Power-Sector Readiness
Russia’s Defense Ministry has said its armed forces are preparing large-scale strikes against Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. According to the ministry, the planned attacks are retaliation for ongoing strikes by the Kyiv government on Russian civilian structures and the country's fuel-and-energy complex. The statement appeared on Telegram and was cited by Rubricka.
Meanwhile, Ukraine is working to ready its energy system for the coming heating season. Denys Shmyhal, who serves as Deputy Prime Minister and Energy Minister, said new protective shelters and engineering measures are being built around energy facilities. He noted that damaged infrastructure has sometimes been repaired within about a week, showing active efforts to keep the power grid stable.
New Underground Reserves in Ukraine
Ukraine is also launching a pilot program to store minimum required reserves of oil and petroleum products underground. Starting in 2027, at least 20% of the country's minimum diesel fuel stockpile is expected to be held this way. These steps are designed to make energy resources more reliable amid rising threats.
The Russian announcement points to growing tensions in the region, with possible severe effects on Ukraine’s energy security. At the same time, Ukraine’s infrastructure upgrades and new projects reflect its effort to adapt and remain stable despite external pressure. The heating season is a critical window for Ukraine’s grid, making these preparations especially important.
