Surge in Interceptor Drone Supplies
Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense has dramatically ramped up the delivery of interceptor drones. Since the start of 2026, the military has received twice as many of these systems as it did throughout the entire year of 2025. The drones are supplied through direct contracts managed by the Defense Procurement Agency, the 'Army of Drones. Bonus' program, and the DOT-Chain Defence marketplace. This approach strengthens the protection of Ukraine’s airspace.
In March 2026, interceptor drones proved their effectiveness by taking out more than 33,000 enemy unmanned aerial vehicles. In response to this evolving capability, the Ukrainian Air Force established its first-ever small air defense (AD) command, designed to bolster sky protection using interceptor drones.
Significance of Emerging Technologies
Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov highlighted the importance of these technologies, stating: 'Shahed-countering drones are a technological response to the enemy. They are hundreds of times cheaper than missile systems and dozens of times cheaper than Shahed drones, allowing for maximum efficiency in budget spending.'
Fedorov also stressed the need to scale up deliveries, noting that protecting the skies is a key priority outlined by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the national defense strategy. According to Fedorov, the creation of the small AD command significantly enhances Ukraine’s airspace defense.
Additionally, the President has tasked Defense Minister Fedorov and the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine with ramping up production of ground robotic systems to 50,000 units this year. This move signals further development and refinement of the country’s defense capabilities.
