The Ministry of Defense is purchasing 150,000 DNA kits: why a genomic register of military personnel is being created

Міністерство оборони закуповує 150 тисяч наборів для аналізу ДНК, з метою формування геномної бази даних військових.

Purchase of DNA systems for identifying military personnel

The state logistics operator of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine has announced the start of purchasing 150,000 kits of DNA systems for identifying military personnel. The total expected cost of the tender is 37.8 million UAH. This initiative aims to create a unified genomic register of military personnel, which will facilitate the process of identifying the deceased, aid in the search for the missing, and document the events of the war.

The purchased DNA kits will be used to form a register that will allow for more efficient handling of data about military personnel. The genomic information obtained as a result of this procedure will be protected by law and stored in specially equipped conditions. This will ensure an adequate level of confidentiality and data security.

The importance of the genomic register

Thus, the creation of a genomic register will be an important step in systematizing information about military personnel, which, in turn, will significantly improve the processes related to the identification and documentation of military losses.

This initiative is a crucial step in ensuring the rights of military personnel and their families, as proper identification of the deceased and missing persons is critically important for the moral and legal support of families. In the context of a prolonged war, the creation of a genomic register may also facilitate cooperation with international organizations involved in the search and identification of persons missing in conflict.
