Three Ukrainian Municipalities Selected for Major Water System Modernization

Три українські громади отримали можливість оновити свої водопостачальні системи.

Ministry Announces Pilot Program

The Ministry for Communities and Territories Development has chosen the first three municipalities to participate in a pilot program for modernizing water supply and sewage systems. This initiative is part of the EU4Green Recovery East program. The three communal enterprises selected for a comprehensive technical assessment are Pustomytyvodokanal, Drohobychvodokanal, and Kremenchukvodokanal.

Deputy Minister Kostiantyn Kovalchuk stated that following the assessment, each community will receive a detailed modernization roadmap with specific solutions to boost efficiency and environmental safety. He emphasized this as the first phase of technical assistance, with the broader goal of aligning Ukrainian practices with EU legislation and standards for water management. The selected cities will serve as model cases, with successful solutions intended for scaling up to other communities across the country.

Scope and Impact of the Technical Assessment

The forthcoming technical assessment will include:

  • An analysis of wastewater treatment processes,
  • An evaluation of energy consumption and potential optimization,
  • A review of sludge management practices.

Additionally, the assessment will evaluate the technical condition of critical infrastructure, aiming to improve water supply systems, reservoirs, dams, logistics, and other key operational areas.

This project is a key component of Ukraine's ongoing efforts to enhance its environmental standards and improve public quality of life, even amidst the severe challenges posed by the ongoing war with the Russian Federation. Modernizing this critical infrastructure is vital for the nation's recovery and long-term resilience.

The implementation of modern approaches to water and sewage management represents a crucial step toward the sustainable development of Ukrainian communities. The findings from the technical assessment are expected to form the basis for raising environmental standards and improving service quality for residents. A successful pilot could provide a valuable blueprint for other regions and underscore the importance of international cooperation in tackling complex environmental challenges.

As Ukraine embarks on this significant modernization initiative, it's essential to recognize the broader context of international support for the country's water infrastructure. Recently, the EU pledged €125 million to enhance various water projects across Ukraine, highlighting the commitment to improving essential services.
