Peace negotiations with Russia: why Europe fears new aggression after the agreement

European officials express concerns about the possibility that a peace agreement regarding Ukraine may allow Russia to prepare for new aggressive actions. Among the main topics of discussion are:

  • the creation of a demilitarized zone;
  • control over territories;
  • possible plebiscites.

Consultations on the peace agreement are taking place with the mediation of the United States, adding an additional layer of complexity to an already tense situation.

Russia demands that Ukraine withdraw its forces from the Donetsk and Luhansk regions. If the Russian scenario is implemented, it could lead to Ukraine losing about 20% of its territory. It is also proposed to 'freeze' the front line in the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions according to the current confrontation. The negotiations are ongoing in a closed format, raising further questions and concerns among European leaders.

Concerns of European leaders

U.S. Special Envoy Steve Vitkoff plans to hold meetings with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders in Berlin. Volodymyr Zelensky emphasizes the importance of receiving a clear answer to the question:

“If Russia starts the war again, what will our partners do?” – Volodymyr Zelensky

This rhetoric underscores the concern that Ukraine may become Russia's next target. Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte also notes:

“We are Russia's next target. And we are already in the risk zone.” – Mark Rutte

Discussions about a demilitarized zone, control over territories, and possible plebiscites are important aspects that could have serious implications for stability in the region. European countries are worried that any compromises could lead to a weakening of security in Ukraine and beyond, paving the way for further aggression from Russia. It is crucial for all parties to be aware of the consequences of any decisions regarding peace negotiations.

The negotiations for a peaceful resolution of the conflict in Ukraine reflect a complex geopolitical situation where every step has potential consequences for the security of the European continent. European leaders, recognizing the historical context of Russia's aggression, strive to find a balance between supporting Ukraine and avoiding further escalation of the conflict. Without clear security guarantees for Ukraine, any concessions could threaten not only its territorial integrity but also stability throughout the region.
