The corrupt system in Ukraine

Miroslav Marinovich, Vice-Rector of the Ukrainian Catholic University, discussed the corrupt system in Ukraine in an interview, analyzing the changes in the elites and their impact on society. He pointed out that the corrupt system has existed in Ukraine for four decades, which indicates a deep-rooted nature of these phenomena in society. According to Marinovich, the elites changed in 2019, but this did not lead to significant changes in the system itself. Slogans like 'Spring will come – we will plant them' confirm that the changes were superficial in nature.

Rethinking the role of elites

Marinovich emphasized that 'real changes are only possible through the transformation of elite thinking.' He believes that if the elites realize the necessity for changes in a system that has persisted for four decades, then the situation can improve. However, in his opinion, the concept of elite thinking has not changed, only the people around the 'trough' have.

“And the very principle of the trough has remained,” he noted.

Sharing his experience during the war, Marinovich said that at first he thought the war would be a powerful shock for the country. He was convinced that we were witnessing the final moment of Ukraine's transformation. However, according to him, real changes require a deeper rethinking of the role of elites in society.

Miroslav Marinovich's statements highlight the importance of not only changing the individuals in power but also rethinking their role and responsibility in the context of the corrupt system in Ukraine. This issue remains relevant in the context of the ongoing war and the challenges facing the country, as true transformation can only occur when the elites recognize their responsibility to society. Therefore, it is important to observe further changes in the elites and their intentions regarding the fight against corruption.
