Condition of Kyiv's Paton Bridge
The Paton Bridge in Kyiv has been declared inoperable and unsafe due to critical damage. Its technical condition is a major concern, as the structure has exhausted its operational lifespan. Following recent inspections, both the Metro Bridge and the Paton Bridge have been officially deemed unfit for service. The Paton Bridge was first classified as an emergency structure back in 2017.
Experts have documented extensive corrosion of load-bearing elements, significant damage to cross beams, and dangerous cracks in the joints. In particular, Vyacheslav Bogdanov, First Vice President of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, stated on Facebook that
"the metal of the cross beams supporting the roadway slabs is almost completely destroyed by corrosion. Corrosion processes are becoming increasingly unpredictable, and the structure's remaining service life is assessed as zero."Despite this, traffic continues to use the bridge temporarily, relying on the relatively stable condition of the main girders.
Repair Delays and Historical Significance
Repair work has not begun, even though the city authorities designated Kyivavtodor as the client for reconstruction in 2018. Between 2020 and 2021, tenders for the design work were canceled three times. In early 2026, the National Committee of Ukraine on Theoretical and Applied Mechanics appealed to the government with proposals for funding and organizing a major overhaul. Specialized institutes of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine have also declared their readiness to provide expert support.
The Paton Bridge is the world's first all-welded automobile bridge, underscoring its historical and engineering significance. However, its current state raises serious safety concerns and highlights the urgent need for intervention. This situation serves as a stark reminder of the critical need for systematic infrastructure monitoring and timely maintenance in aging cities.
The plight of the Paton Bridge underscores the broader challenge of maintaining critical infrastructure. Its historical value cannot obscure its critical condition, which jeopardizes road safety. It is imperative that authorities take urgent steps to organize repairs and ensure the structure's stability, considering the potential risks to Kyiv's urban transport and residents.
