A Sewage Disaster Engulfs the Russian Bomber City of Engels

Виникнення масштабних проблем з каналізацією в містечку Енгельс, де базуються російські бомбардувальники.

Collapse of the Main Sewer Collector in Engels

A catastrophic failure of the primary sewer collector in the Russian city of Engels has flooded residential yards and ground-floor apartments with raw sewage. The incident, which occurred on April 29 on Mendeleev Street, forced local authorities to declare a municipal-level state of emergency, affecting at least 200,000 residents. The main gravity-flow pipeline suddenly stopped functioning, triggering the crisis.

Heavy rainfall following the breakdown worsened the situation, turning streets and courtyards into a vast lake of human waste. Utility crews have urged residents to stop flushing anything down toilets or sinks, warning that without water pressure, waste is accumulating inside the pipes. The city’s infrastructure, already strained, is now overwhelmed by the contamination.

Health Warnings and Ongoing Water Crisis

In response, Russia’s consumer safety watchdog, Rospotrebnadzor, advised the population to drink only boiled or bottled water. To manage the cleanup, local officials purchased specialized equipment from the city of Yaroslavl. Water supply cuts have been announced across Engels, and residents are expected to go without running water for at least another 24 hours.

Engels is notably the home base for Russian strategic bombers that carry out strikes against Ukraine. Earlier this winter, the city suffered a separate infrastructure collapse when heating and hot water systems failed, leaving residents in freezing conditions. Ukrainian defense forces have previously targeted the Engels airfield in the Saratov region with drone attacks. The city now faces a compounding crisis of failing public utilities, raising serious concerns about public health and safety.
